Police were called to a petrol station in Oakland, California, just before 6pm on Monday night local time.

They did not say if there had been any arrests.

An Oakland Police Department (OPD) spokesperson said seven of the victims were “listed in stable condition”.

The OPD wrote on Facebook officers were dispatched “to investigate a ShotSpotter activation”.

“During the course of the investigation, officers learned there was a shooting between several individuals,” it wrote.

“Officers arrived on scene and located several casings but did not locate any victims on scene.

“OPD Communication Division received notification of multiple gunshot wound victims self transporting to several area hospitals.

“At this time, we are aware of eight victims, one who is deceased and the remaining victims were listed in stable condition.

“The deceased victim’s identity is being withheld at this time pending notification to next of kin.”

Hours before the shooting, the OPD announced it had recorded 40 instances of gunfire in the week of January 16-22, and had recovered 75 firearms.

The incident follows the killing of 11 people at a ballroom dance hall in Monterey Park, Southern California, late on Saturday local time.

And on Monday police were also called to two related shootings on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay. Those incidents took place at a mushroom farm and a trucking firm, just 66 kilometres away from Oakland.
