Tennis Falls to No. 5 Texas A&M in Season Opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis program dropped its season opener against No. 5 Texas A&M, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon from the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
 

“It’s the first match of the season and Texas A&M is one of the best teams in the country so very proud of the team effort today,” Head Coach Helena Besovic said. “I thought we were very competitive with them and almost every match was right there; we never gave up. We have a good team this year, a team that wants to do well, is supportive of each other and I’m very excited for what’s to come this season”
 

In doubles, Houston (0-1) dropped two matches to Texas A&M (1-0).  On court two, Sonya Kovalenko and Laura Slisane dropped the match, 6-1, to A&M’s Carson Branstine and Daria Smetannikov, while Elena Trencheva and Sophie Schouten fell to Salma Ewing and Jayci Goldsmith, 6-3, on court one.
 

In singles play, the Cougars forced two matches to three sets. Kovalenko and Schouten both won their first sets, 6-4 and 6-2, respectively. Schouten fell to A&M’s Gianna Pielet 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Kovalenko lost to Lizanne Boyer 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
 
UP NEXT
Houston will head out for a weekend road trip to take on Baylor and UTRGV in Waco, Texas, at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor. The Cougars will face the Bears at noon Saturday, followed by a noon Sunday match against the Vaqueros.
 
The Cougars will open their home slate at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility against Elon at 10 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 27.
