Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Mayor Eric Johnson criticize Brett Maher’s blocked PAT vs. 49ers

After the Dallas Cowboys scored their first touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers in their NFC divisional round playoff game, kicker Brett Maher again received a share of negative attention.

Maher’s first extra-point attempt was blocked, causing a stir on social media. Greg Abbott was among the viewers that wasn’t too impressed with the kicker’s recent blunder.

Maher missed four extra-point attempts against Tampa Bay in Dallas’ wild card win on Monday. While his first kick against San Francisco wasn’t a direct miss, broadcast replays didn’t do Maher any favors.

It appeared his original kick was dragging wide left of the uprights.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson also offered some words of advice for the Cowboys after seeing the events unfold. Johnson called the kick a “sure miss,” even if it wasn’t blocked.

Dallas made the decision to stick with Maher for their divisional round playoff game after signing an insurance option in Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad earlier in the week.

Maher made 29 of 32 field goal attempts throughout the regular season, going 50-for-53 on extra-point attempts. After missing against the 49ers, he has gone 1-for-6 on PATs in the postseason.

The Cowboys kicker found some redemption with a made field goal from 25 yards out early in the third quarter. The field goal attempt was about eight yards ahead of the spot where an extra point would take place, but Maher’s kick went in down the middle.

Maher’s accurate kick helped Dallas tie the game up at 9-9.
